This year, REWET will be showcased at 14th European Conference on Ecological Restoration (SERE 2024) "Bridging Science, Practice, and Policy of Nature Restoration", which will be held from 26 to 30 of August in Tartu, Estonia.
SERE 2024 is an international conference organised by the Society for Ecological Restoration (SER). Ecological restoration is a topic that holds a prominent place on both political and scientific agendas. The decline in biodiversity demands our urgent attention, and degraded ecosystems around the world require an effective and knowledge-driven path to recovery. The EU is actively working on the Nature Restoration Law, and in 2024, new and ambitious goals and actions to reverse biodiversity decline in Europe will be agreed upon.
REWET will be represented at the conference in a scientific session and in a specific workshop.
The session, organised in collaboration with sister projects ALFAwetlands, RESTORE4Cs and WET HORIZONS, will cover the topic "Restoration of wetlands: Pathways, trafe-off and co-benefits".
In this special session, these four EU projects will succinctly outline their initiatives aimed at accelerating wetland restoration encompassing natural wetlands, peatlands, mineral coastal wetlands, and floodplains. The session will also feature concise presentations derived from open abstract submissions, offering diverse insights.
“As the EU REWET project coordinator, I am thrilled to participate in the SERE 2024 conference in Estonia", declares Vanessa Ferreira, REWET project coordinator. "This event provides an excellent platform to showcase the innovative work we're doing in wetland restoration and to engage with fellow experts in the field of ecosystem resilience. Our presence at SERE 2024 underscores the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing climate change and biodiversity loss through nature-based solutions. I look forward to sharing our project's progress, learning from other cutting-edge initiatives, and fostering new partnerships that will contribute to the sustainable management of Europe's wetlands.”
During this first day, REWET will be represented by IDENER, Wetlands International and the University of Tartu.
Also, REWET partner BAX organised on 25 August 2024 a workshop open to all interested audiences called "Accelerating Wetland Restoration, Conservation, and Sustainable Management". The session engaged practitioners, scientists, businesses in a role-play challenging wetland restoration stakeholders to think through the motivations and incentives of others.
“At Bax, we believe that effective wetland restoration, conservation, and sustainable management require a collective approach", says Lisa Wiatschka from BAX. Innovation in this field hinges on the collaboration of diverse stakeholders, from scientists to policymakers, businesses to local communities. As partners in the EU REWET project, we’re excited to contribute our expertise in integrating science, policy, and economic insights. Our workshop at SERE 2024 aims to empower stakeholders to navigate current challenges by exploring new business models and collaborative strategies. By shifting perspectives and fostering cooperation, we can develop sustainable solutions that deliver long-term benefits for both people and nature.”
