On 19th and 20th October, the REWET consortium members and associated partners celebrated the Project Kick-Off Meeting in Seville, Spain. The meeting marked the beginning of this ambitious project that will focus during 4 years on determining how the restoration and management of wetlands can be optimised to maximise their carbon uptake.
The REWET consortium consists of 18 partners from 9 different countries (Spain, Austria, Netherlands, Finland, Belgium, Estonia, Italy, Germany and Portugal). The meeting was a great opportunity to gather for the first time and discuss the strategy behind the research, and the objectives of the project and to set up a framework to coordinate efforts and maximise the results.
The seven demonstrators (called Open Labs) were also presented by each coordinator. These include freshwater wetlands, peatlands and floodplains located in the Netherlands, Austria, Finland, Estonia, Belgium, Italy and Portugal, and will be the key to fully understand the wetlands-carbon-climate nexus and provide a replication plan to boost successful wetlands restoration around Europe.
